Born from Atari's Pong and 2600 video game systems of the 1970's; the Atari 5200 and Colecovision games systems of the early 1980's; Nintendo's NES platform of the mid 1980's; the Super NES, Sega Genesis and Sony Playstation of the1990's; and the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox systems of the early 2000's; the video game consoles of today are like nothing experienced before. Today's game consoles, which include Microsoft's Xbox360, Sony's Playstation3, and Nintendo's Wii, can have 120 gigabyte hard drives for storage, dual core processors, and HD and Blu-ray DVD players, not to mention wireless internet capabilities. Oftentimes, these dedicated video game / entertainment systems are even more powerful and sophisticated than the family desktop personal computer in the same household. While each of these game consoles offer "base" packages in the price range of $300 - $600, these usually are equipped with a smaller hard drive, one basic controller, and may be packaged with a game or two. However, to fully enjoy the multiplayer capabilities and varied type of games offered by the systems, an owner can purchase systems with larger hard drives for storage, many different games and wireless controllers that can push a total package price into the $1,000 - $1,250 range. Oftentimes, it is significantly cheaper to purchase the system and add-ons as a package rather than purchasing the components individually. EBay online auctions offer the video game consumer an alternative source to purchase both vintage and new consoles, accessories and games at prices drastically reduced from those offered in the local "brick and mortar" outlets, albiet with much less after-purchase customer service.
